John is a native of Southern Wake County. His family has a long tradition in our community. From his great grandfather working on the railroad that once connected Apex, Holly Springs and Fuquay-Varina, to his parents’ devoted service to our community. John has continued this legacy by serving our community and making a positive impact for our residents, schools, businesses and local governments.
The value of hard work was instilled in John at an early age. He worked on his family’s and neighboring farms during the summers and had multiple jobs once school started.
John graduated from Fuquay-Varina High School and continued his education at Appalachian State University where he double majored and received degrees in Community/Regional Planning and Geography. While attending ASU, John gained valuable experience in government. From serving on the Town of Boone’s Planning Commission to working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, John expanded his knowledge of the practical functions of government.
After graduating from ASU, John continued serving in North Carolina local government as a land use planner. In 1993, he accepted a position with the U.S. Department of Defense in Washington, D.C. Initially serving as a cartographer, his diligent work effort afforded him opportunities to serve as a contracting officer and on the staff of the agency’s international office. Working fulltime in D.C., John obtained a master’s degree in International Affairs from The Catholic University of America. The work and educational experience in D.C. expanded John’s understanding of government and his desire to serve.
John’s strong desire to serve others motivated him to make a career change and attend law school.
John’s children attend public schools and his wife works in his small business.
John is a leader and advocate for our community. He was awarded the 2017 Fuquay-Varina Chamber of Commerce Leadership Award. In 2015 John was the chair of the Fuquay Varina Future Now bond referendum committee, supporting transportation and infrastructure bonds for Fuquay-Varina. He has served on multiple committees for his church in Holly Springs, the Town of Fuquay-Varina and its chamber of commerce. John’s leadership has and will continue to make a positive impact for all of the communities of District 37.
